Employee Spotlight – Steve Gammons, Property Manager for T. R. Lawing Realty, Inc – Shelby, NC

We sat down this week to talk with Steve Gammons, Property Manager for our Cleveland County location.  As we were getting to know him, we noticed that this quiet fisherman and avid hunter, who loves his grandchildren, was very humbled to be talking about himself.  We turned the conversation to Shelby BBQ!  Immediately, his eyes lit up as we began an amazing discussion about some of NC’s favorite comfort foods.  You see, this guy from Detroit, who moved to the area in 1974 has embraced our southern ways and technically has lived here long enough for us to accept him as our own!  After having lunch at Alston Bridges BBQ, just outside of Uptown Shelby that day, we discussed the differences between that Bridges and Red Bridges BBQ off Hwy 74.  By the way, if you mention Bridges BBQ to any Shelby native, the first question will always be, “Which one?”

We laughed and discussed at what we liked best about both BBQ joints and Steve then turned to a story of his brother.  When he visits, he always eats at both Red Bridges BBQ & Lodge one day and Alston Bridges BBQ on another day to make sure he has his fill of the best that Shelby has to offer.  He then went on to say that he also makes sure to fill a cheap cooler full of Neese’s Liver Mush to take back home. Debbie Philbeck, Assistant Property Manager, interjects that she preferrfed Jenkins Food’s liver mush, which along with Mack’s Liver Mush & Meats, has a whole Cleveland County story of its own. Steve piped back that whatever he was eating, he liked his liver mush thin and crispy.  By the way, did you know that Shelby is home to the Official State of North Carolina Fall Liver Mush Festival?  It’s a two-day event that happens every October along with one of the largest pet festivals around called Mush, Music and Mutts Festival.  We had no idea but will be marking our calendars for next year.

Shelby, NC is a little under an hour west of Charlotte. Take I-85 South to US 74 West and it will take you straight to Shelby.  Once there, PLEASE follow the directional signs for all that Shelby has to offer as far as their favorite landmarks.  You will not regret one moment driving off the beaten path, we promise!
